Overcrowding Leads to New High School.

Constuction is on schedule and you can really see the sunburst shape forming as the wings of the new Canutillo High School reach toward the Franklin Mountains. The new high school is sorely needed as a remedy to the overcrowding of the old high school on Bosque Road. The expected date for classes is set for Fall of 2005.

The new building is taking a bold step in broadcasting its features and being an architectural statement. With the sides of the walls of the concert and arts facility readily displaying notes for all the passing world to see as they drive by on I-10.

This is not the only difference from the plain building that it replaces. Even the difference in location tells of the changes of land use in the Upper Valley. The old high school was in a rural area which is still very uncongested with proximity to the Rio Grande River. The new facility is up in the desert where one can look down into the valley below. Next to the freeway, the location indicates that the curriculum will focus on jobs of tomorrow. The neighborhood is different as well. The new school has a new educational partner in EPCC Northwest campus nextdoor.

Traffic on the frontage road to both Canutillo High School and EPCC is expected to be somewhat problematic for some time until other routes are completed.
