Summer Ends Today... Not the Heat..

It was a typical day out on the irrigation canal near Fox Grove. A frog was resting on the catwalk that was almost submerged watching all of the activity… especially the activity that had a flight path over his head.

The lazy summer days for the residents of the canal continue even as Summer is officially over today, Thursday September 22, 2005. The minnows are now thick as carpet when its time for a sunset feeding of mosquitoes and flies.

The minnows were provided by the El Paso City/County Health Department Vector Control staff. Once the minnows took, the mosquitoes population dwindled.

Tadpoles of varying sizes are also evident. Some tadpoles look like fish… as in bigger than minnows … they are so large.

Also, adding to the summer mystique, the dragon flies are plentiful and add a jewel like aura to the “pond” life.

Soon the canal will be empty with all of its occupants flushed into the drainage canal and on their way to the Rio Grande or not. They will probably not get that far as the Borderland Spur Drain is without a headwater flow and is mostly stagnant. This is a problem for mosquitoes borne illnesses.
