5th Grader Swims in State Meet.

Laura Andrea Hernandez, 10, is a very busy girl and she had a very busy summer. Besides playing the violin, reading many books, learning computer graphic design, this summer; she and her family went to Austin where she competed in a swim meet.

This busy youngster is now in the 5th grade at Carlos Rivera Elementary School. She has been swimming for the Southwest Aquatic Team (SWAT) for 2 years and she swam at the Texas Open Swim Meet held at the University of Texas at Austin swim and diving center. Laura competed in the 200 meter Backstroke, 100 meter Freestyle and the 50 meter Breaststroke.

Laura didn't win any trophies but she said the experience was wonderful and since she "did [her] best" she feels very good about her efforts.

The Hernandez family traveled with about another nine famiies from the SWAT swimmers.

She and her family took tours of the UT campus and even the LBJ Library which is on the UT campus. It was an eye-opening experience for both her and her family. Laura wants to be a physician and perhaps now she will consider UT as a university for her future studies.

The Upper Valley Beacon salutes Laura for her efforts to grow as an individual and as a healer.
