ASARCO Found to Exceed Limits.

During recent testimony in the hearing to determine if the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality will grant ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Company) a new permit; it was revealed that ASARCO had exceeded emmission levels for several contaminants. During the 1990's there were higher levels of nitrious oxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide emitted than the state allowed.

These violations were accepted by the TCEQ without ASARCO being hit with any sanctions. Tesitmony also pointed out that the TCEQ actually granted ASARCO higher levels of emmissions than were allowed by their 1992 permit; in fact, granting the smelter an amendment to that agreement in 1999 just before it shut down due to the plunge in Copper prices.
