Statistics obtained from the Traffic office at City Hall in El Paso indicate that there is a huge increase in traffic accidents in the Upper Valley and the trend seems to have started in 2004.

Traffic Accidents for 2003, 2004 and the First Quarter of 2005.
We checked on four (4) intersections:

• Upper Valley Road and Borderland Road
  No accidents in 2003. 2 in 2004 and 1 in 2005 (March 30, 2005)
  Upper Valley Beacon reported on the second accident in April.

• Upper Valley Road and Artcraft
  1 in 2003, 2 in 2004 and 1 in 2005 (March 30, 2005)
  Upper Valley Beacon reported on the second accident in April.

• Upper Valley Road and Country Club.
  2 in 2003, 2 in 2004 and 1 in 2005

• Westside and Borderland Road
  1 in 2003, 0 in 2004 and 0 in 2005 (March 30, 2005)
  Upper Valley Beacon reported on the one car accident just north of the intersection in April.

From 2003 to 2004 there was a 50% increas overall with Upper Valley Road at Artcraft jumping 100%. Upper Valley Road and Borderland jumed from 0 to 2 accidents or 200% for discussion sake.

When 2005 is extrapolated out for a full year there appear to be large jumps in the percentage of traffic accidents.

From 2004 to 2005 there may be a 200% increase with, based upon the March data and our reports, a 200% increase at Upper Valley Road at Borderland Road and the same for Artcraft and Country Club at the Upper Valley Road intersection.

There have been other accidents at intersections that were not even constructed in 2003. Westside Road and Upper Valley Road have many new intersections and the traffic is only increasing.

The jump from 2003 to 2005 is over 300%.

Another danger area is the right turn exit lane off of Artcraft traveling west at Upper Valley Road. Vehicles have been seen entering that lane prior to the end of the white lines designated to keep traffic in the main lanes until closer to the intersection.
