Steers Give Rodeo Cowboys a Handful.
There are no great herds of cattle being driven through El Paso del Norte, but for these rodeo cowboys its time to saddle up and compete. Recently, the area cowboys showed up with their horses, spurs and ropes to do some calf ropin' at the Rio Grande Valley Ranch Arena just over the river near Canutillo, Texas. The arena is located at Strahan Road and La Union near Bosque Road.
During the competition, one cowboy rides his horse as the steer is released and then another cowboy rides a head to direct the steer away from the fence. The first cowboy has to rope the horns and then the other cowboy will rope the hind legs to get the steer to the ground.
This rodeo competition takes great riding skills and synchronization with ones horse along with a good arm. Many times the steer only gives the riders a short window of opportunity to get the noose over the horns. Sometimes it looks as if the noose just shoots out of the cowboys hand and bingo... the steer is roped.
