Guest Column: John Cook Should be Mayor.
I have known John for over two years. During that time, I have found him to be a knowledgeable, accessible, concerned and determined City Council Representative. (In contrast, Mayor Wardy has been inaccessible and unwilling to discuss City issues with me.)
I appreciate Mr. Cook's easy-going style. I find his weekly constituent newsletter very useful and informative. On El Paso's political issues, John and I think very much alike. The one major area in which we differ is the use of Certificates of Obligation (commonly referred to as CO's). John favors their use.
I am concerned about CO's being misused, and therefore have advocated against using them. I am confident that John will use CO's properly and in accordance with State Statutes. (In contrast, Mayor Wardy and I differ vehemently on many issues, including economic development, tax abatements, arroyo protection, city growth and zoning, etc..)
In summary, had I been elected to City Council from District 1, I would have patterned my tenure after Mr. Cook's. To me, he is the consummate Representative. I whole-heartily recommend voting for Mr. Cook for Mayor of El Paso.
