New Orchard Gets Help from El Niņo.

Mohammad Tavakoli is bucking the trend of tract homes and thrift shops for the Upper Valley. Not only that, but he is keeping his water rights to use for his pecan and fruit orchard. Additionally, there will be grapes and a vegatable garden next to the lawn near the house.

The orchard will have over 100 each of both pecan trees and fruit trees. Apples and peaches along with some nectarines make up the majority of the fruit trees.

Mohammad has a dream of moving his family to the Upper Valley. To him, the valley is for growing things and enjoying the beauty around you. For this reason, Mohammad has started growing his palm trees and pine trees of which these will be transplanted after his home is sufficiently constructed so as not to get in the way of the work.

Last summer Mohammad and his family invited friends to the orchard for Sunday cook-outs. It is on these days that Mohammad would pump water into his orchard from the old well that was on the site. During the drought, he uses the pump and less salty irrigation water alternatively.

The El Niņo of 2004-2005 has been very generous for Mohammad and all of the farmers in the Upper Valley. The fall and winter rains and snow have been very kind to the young trees. After the rest of the land was irrigated for the last time in September, Mohammad has not had to use the pump at all. The rains have given the young trees plenty of water and leeched some of the salts out of the topsoil.

Think Rain!!! The rains and snow in the southern Colorado Rockies has given Mohammad and other farmers hope for a full allotment of river water this coming spring and summer.
