Endless Summers Riding the Ditches.
For nearly 3 decades, Fred Walker has been riding the ditches either here in the Upper Valley or further north in the Mesilla Valley just up the river from Las Cruces... in a little town called Doņa Ana.
Heck... he didn't even know what a "Ditch Rider" was at the time... it must have had a good ring to it says Fred..."It just sounded good".
What Fred ended up doing was getting caught in the web of the valley. He had been working at a gas station and the thought of working out in the country... in the clean air... (Can you remember... or imagine... what the air in the valley was like back in 1966?) and farmland was at least appealing.
Well, to Fred it must have sounded like he won the lottery. Fred communted to Doņa Ana for years from the El Paso's Lower Valley... and that was before the freeway was completed.
Fred is putting in his last few years and says he has a dream job waiting for him when he retires.
More about Fred Walker in the www.UpperValleyLiving.biz next month.
