Rio Grande... to Bring Near Record Snow Melt.
The Rio Grande began flowing through the Upper Valley after water was released from Caballo Dam just south of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. For the first time in many years, the Elephant Butte Irrigation District and the El Paso County Irrigation District # 1 both have issued full allotments of water to their water users including farmers and small tract home owners.
Near record snow in the winter of 2007-2008 are expected to increase the flow from southern Colorado through northern New Mexico. What people aren't talking about is that global warming may actually increase rain and snow if not directly on the Upper Valley/Mesilla Valley at least it may be in southwestern Colorado. Since UpperValleyBeacon.com started in 2004 and started the "Think Rain" chant... southwestern Colorado has had two of the deepest snow packs on record... and of course, El Paso had the floods in 2006... but, we had nothing to do with that.
This year we are showing signs of a drought but come July 4th we will see if the monsoons arrive like a lion or a lamb.
