Sunland Park Elects New City Officials.
Along with the changing of the guard in the City Hall at Sunland Park there were other positions that were filled or changed.
In what many call a sweep, Judge Martin Resendez won the mayor's election in a landslide over City Councilor Juan Fuentes. Resendiz, 37, was part of a slate of candidates that also had success. Resendez aligned himself and supported three of the four winning candidates: Horacio Favela, Daniel Salinas and Jessica Avila.
Horacio Favela won the municipal judgeship seat with 704 votes to Maria Laura Estrada's 524 votes. Salinas won the District 4 City Council seat, with 137 votes to Carolina H. Renteria's 113 votes. Also, in the slate, Jessica Avila, who was uncontested, won with 134 votes for District 6.
Another member of this Resendez slate was a late comer to the race and running as a write-in candidate, Angelica M. Marquez. Marquez lost in a narrow victory by Erika Isabel Relatore 118 to 96.
Clearly, the residents of Sunland Park were swayed in a new direction.
