Super Bowl 2007: A Westside Super Event.

What could be better. Super Bowl Sunday at one of the real pubs on El Paso’s Westside. You know "a place where every one knows your name”. Erin’s Bar & Grill is just such a place where those in the know come to make this great sporting event a real community event.

Unlike other bars that arrive in the area, Erin’s is a real bar... and most of the time a real sports bar. There are pool tables, dart boards and plenty of big-screen TVs to keep everyone abreast of the sporting world. But, there is also karaoke during the week.

But, on Super Bowl Sunday, Erin’s is the place where you can really get into the game and raise the roof when your team scores.

Plus, not only does this great Westside institution carry the game but it serves up a tasty brisket lunch to keep everyone’s strength up for the second half. On the house! How's that for community spirit. How many of the chain “bars” will do that?

But, back to the game, the drama and the “thrill of victory..." In the past there have been many Super Bowls that just fizzled out or were boring from start to finish. But not this one.

Well, within 5 seconds of the kick-off, you knew that this was not going to be a dull Super Bowl. As the Bears’ superstar kick-off return man, Devon Hester, ran the opening kick-off back for a 92-yard TD there were cheers and moans from both of Erin’s big rooms.

Mike Ramirez and Jessica Garrison (pictured..... at right.) were off to a rocky start. Jessica was loving the Bears’ lightning quick score while Ramirez, the Colts fan was muttering “Oh, Nooooo....”. However, as the tide turned on the Colt running game and QB Peyton Manning’s brilliant execution... Ramirez had the last laugh.

And talk about a diverse group. There were even die-hard Colt fans who were born in Palestine and didn’t even know football until they came to the US. (From left to right, Resat Azzam, Fadi Azzam and Muhamed Azzam. Pictured at left.) We heard from one of the Colt fans, Fadi Azzam, that Grossman has parents who are multi-millionaires and doesn’t need to win... no incentive. Boy, that's a new one.

And don't forget the ever present NFC faithful... in this case, Packer fans like Charlie Hoover who were pulling for the Bears. (That's his Harley-Davidson - Chicago jacket - pictured above - that he brought along with his Packer gear).

The Chicago Bears were hoping to tip-toe their way to a Super Bowl win. Walking on eggshells was their QB Rex Grossman. Grossman, had suffered through some horrendous Sunday performances and it remained to be seen... "Which Grossman would show up". To help Grossman keep his head from being rattled; the Bears were supposed to be able to ride their tag-team of running backs at a full gallop, attacking the supposedly porous Indianapolis Colts run defense.

Just check out Erin’s favorite Super Bowl half-time show. Ben and Linda Rivera’s make a point of giving back to the community... they serve up their famous beef brisket spread which almost settles down those nervous Bear fans who are getting a bit edgy and keeps up the strength of the Colts fans for more second-half cheering.

Erin’s Pub and the Super Bowl... now that’s a winner.
