Blizzard of the Century Fizzles into the Drain.

It was supposed to be the Blizzard of the Century. The stars were lined up and everything looked... on paper and radar, at least, that this was going to dump tens of inches of the white stuff all over our region.

We tracked it on radar and you could see that snow was creeping down from Socorro, New Mexico to the north and from Silver City, NM to the northwest.

But, when the radar showed that it had reached the Upper Valley, Santa Teresa, NM and Westside El Paso... something was wrong. One look out the window and you could see that it was still raining.

It turns out that the amount of moisture in the air was so much that the clouds were so low that the radar was misrepresenting that phenomenon and calling it snow.

With the Franklins getting a bit of snow and the Lower Valley getting a bit you could have forgiven the meterologists who swayed the ISD's to shut-down the schools on Friday the 22nd of January. But, the kids were the only winners on this day.

The day the Blizzard of the Century fizzled down the drain as we got days and days of rain.

What happened? The cold air mass couldn't cut through the moisture in time to mix over our region. Mt. Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso, New Mexico and the Sierra Madres in Mexico got plenty though.
