Unmarked Patrol Car Prowls in Anthony, Texas.
Tucked away at the edge of Texas is a small town along the Rio Grande and it has a portion in New Mexico and the rest in Texas. Anthony, Texas has very little traffic but that has grown as the valley has in population. But Anthony has one significant attribute. It is in a vital position for traffic entering and exiting New Mexico.
Anthony is the first town on I-10 as you enter Texas from New Mexico.
After many calls to the City of Anthony and the Anthony Police Department we finally spoke with a police officer. The spokesman did verify that the APD does use unmarked vehicles. However, it was indicated that the vehicle was not patroling the streets which are only two-lanes, to issue citations.
The incident that we photographed was determined by the unmarked patrol car being driven by an officer along Franklin (the main artery from I-10 to Doniphan (Hiway 80). This may just have been coincidence that a motorcycle was stopped as the APD spokesperson did not indicate that Anthony streets were being targeted by this unmarked vehicle.
Rather, the designation of the unmarked vehicle was to patrol I-10 adjacent to Anthony, Tx. The jurisdiction fo the Town of Anthony is only about 2 miles east of the Texas/New Mexico line.
While this might suggest a poor welcoming if not a speed trap; the spokesperson did not agree with either of these assessments. But instead of a warm Texas welcome the Town of Anthony, Tx has decided to use an unmarked patrol car to prowl along I-10 within its 2 mile jurisdiction.
The spokesman did indicate that it is used primarily for patroling the freeway... for those 2 miles. Why? Speeders? Accidents?? Reasoning behind this policy or plan was not delineated.
