Playoffs Start & Finish for T-Birds.

Things were not looking good for the T-Birds. As the only westside team to make it to the playoffs... they were coming off a stunning OT defeat at the hands of their westside arch-rivals the Franklin Cougars... would they be able to get over it... and play another Permian Basin team. The game was in the SunBowl against Amarillo Tascosa.

Tascosa was a name that brought fear to its opponents years agao. They hadn't won a playoff game since 1967 but that doesn't mean that they were a good football program. Remember, everytime the El Paso teams play a Permian Basin team, they are playing against a minor-league team. Some of their players would be playing college ball if they were academically eligible and had graduated.

Coronado played the first half close but they missed some chances. There was the pass at the goal line that was picked off by Tascosa. QB Cameron Trotter had two interceptions... one in the first quarter that kept the T-Birds from scoring. It was 9-6 at halftime with Tascosa ahead. Tascosa won 33-23.

This is a bit deceptive. Tascosa was running the ball and their defense was bending but not breaking. If it wasn't for 2 late scores by the T-Birds in the last minute and a half... it would have been a second half rout. In the end it was too much of the Tascosa running game and a sub-par day for QB Trotter that spelled defeat for Coronado.

The Coronado side of the stadium was noticably sparse compared to the game a week earlier against Franklin. The T-Bird Cheerleaders could not get the fans into the game and the small but vocal Amarillo fans that drove in to the game drown-out the T-Bird fans.
