Voters Get Out and Send a Message.
The message this year was "Anyone but a Republican". And that was what occured thoughout this great land... except it didn't hold true for El Paso County and Southern New Mexico.
The nation had a diferent count. Both houses of the U.S. Congress switched party leadership. This was something that seemed impossible two months before the election. Many were waiting for the Democrats to trip at the wire... but it was the Republican Party that imploded with sexual abuse scandals, cover-ups and of course, the famous "Macaca" racial slur uttered not once but twice by THEN future presidential candidate Senator Allen from Virginia. Allen's loss was the seat that tipped the balance into the Democratic arms.
The heavily republican party areas kept their incumbents. But, Republican new-commer Dee Margo failed horibly in his attempt to spend his way past incumbent Democrat State Senator Eliot Shapleigh.
Dan Haggerty won a tough race to keep his County Commissioners seat and Pat Haggerty won wihtout a Democratic opponent for State Representative Dist. 78. U.S.Congressman Steven Pierce won handily in the 2nd District of New Mexico which covers Southern New Mexico.
