Long Election Campaign Finally Over.
Finally, the 2006 election campaign is over...
Way back in July of 2005, Sergio Coronado was talking about his hopes for the position of El Paso County Judge. In August he kicked off his campaign at the Camino Real and put on a slide show documenting the cute kid becoming a political force as he was elected to the Canutillo School Board. Coronado, an attorney, had graduated from Canutillo High School. He didn't make the run-off and instead endorsed the man that was kicked out of office by El Paso voters just a year before... Anthony Cobos.
The primaries were quiet contentious. The battle was on to unseat 3-term County Commissioner, Dan Haggerty. Gaspar Tarango, a former Constable from the area and Laurie Searls a former school board member made the Upper Valley's presence felt in the election. Along with Municipal Judge Rick Olivo the three thought that this would be the time to take down a republican candidate in a stongly republican area of El Paso County.
Education and experience made the difference as Olivo won the primaries. In the end... it was one republican seat that didn't get lost.
