School Kids Visit Landfill: Learn the Cycle.

The children of Mountain View Elementary School from Socorro ISD made the trek from the Lower Valley area to the Upper Valley to visit the Camino Real Landfill.

After donning their surgical gloves the kids were instructed by Dr. Joe King on the reasons for trash management and also the cycle of life that is an intergal part of any civilization.

It has been said that "America is a nation of waste". Well, at the landfill, the students understand just what that means. According to figures released by studies, the average American throws away nearly 8 pounds of trash each and every day of the year.

Now we knew there were waste management problems decades ago but we have done nothing to change our habits and thus contribute to the actual need for landfills. If not for landfills, the children and their teacher learn, where would we put all of that trash.

The kids also learn that a landfill is a preferrable location for trash than random dumping along the river or arroyos.

Still, that's a lot of trash. They get the idea that they are a part of the problem or part of the solution.

Can you cut your trash to 4 pounds a day??? How about 2???

If you cut out junk food, eat fresh vegatables, eat whole grains with your protein source... it is easy to pollute much much less.
