Landfill Permit Talks Stalled.
In what must have been a surprise to many in the community; the Sunland Park City Council in a special session tabled the issue of coming up with a new host agreement with the Camino Real Landfill and their corporate office.
The host agreement is not an offical part of the negotiations of a permit renewal... not legislative or departmental, however, it is a natural part of being a good neighbor.
The City of Sunland Park has had a host agreement with the Camino Real Landfill for ten years during this past permit duration. Because of that agreement, Sunland Park benefits economically and materially from the Landfill. Not only are part of the profits shared with the community, but, there are in-kind services such as free waste management services for members of the community. There are also, contributions for community betterment, most recently, trash removal and paint for the citizens of Anapara to spruce up their town.
The question asked by residents was "Didn't the City Council members understand the extent of the host agreement? If they did they would certainly have either voted in favor or not. But to table it and to leave it without closure only hurts the community. The monthly checks from the Landfill are not flowing to the community coffers as long as there is no agreement.
Ther permit process continues at the State level even as the community loses thousands of dollars.
