McNutt Road Expansion Finally Completed
After over a year of construction, the McNutt Road Expansion has finally been completed. The once lonely and sparsely crowded truck route above the valley floor had been in need of an expansion for years. The two-lane road has been expanded to a modern 4-lane highway between the far north edge of Sunland Park, which already has 4-lanes, and right up to the Santa Teresa area... but not reaching the Country Club intersection.
The City of Sunland Park has been moving on its plans for a modern and functional transportation route for years.
Just prior to its completion, as crews finalized the clean-up and stripes, signs were put in place; an ambulance was delayed because of the limited use of only 2 of the new lanes.
While the expansion will make driving a breeze it doesn't solve the traffic problems of the Upper Valley. This expansion will assist traffic which will flow between the Santa Teresa area, including the farming area north toward La Union, and Sunland Park. The problems with the overall traffic system is that once those vehicles reach their destination at Sunland Park they will feed into Doniphan which has to feed into Sunland Park Drive... which is becoming extremely overcrowded. Those reaching Santa Teresa are still going to increase the flow into Country Club Road.
It appears that the slow methodical transformation of the Upper Valley is still on schedule... even though some believe they have saved it. Country Club will become overcrowded to the point that there will be support to bring the Gomez Bridge back on the table. If Gomez Road is expanded then the expansion of Country Club may be pushed through.
