Battle to Save Wildwood Canyon Ends Badly.

Wildwood Canyon is now being destroyed in order for developer Arnold Peinado to complete his residential development. Efforts had been made to make a deal or to purchase it outright, but in the end, compensation could not be agreed upon.

Part of the blame for the loss of Wildwood Canyon goes back to the City of El Paso and the planning department. Rick Schecter, president of the Save the Arroyos group, indicated that the approval for the development was flawed and should not have been granted.

Schecter filed a lawsuit when City Council, on the advice of City Attorney, Charles McNabb, refused to address this issue. According to McNabb "it should be left up to the courts".

So Schecter, who acted upon the good faith of the City Council, filed the lawsuit only to have the City show up in court and take the position that it is not within the courts jurisdiction to make a ruling upon ths matter.

The final destruction of Wildwood Canyon was postponed for several more months as the legal issues were finally settled... much to the detriment of the community.

One of the major problems is the access of this residential community right out onto Westwind at a most perilous curve. Would a unbiased planning department really approve this type of exit and put drivers at risk? This is the type of situation that would have arisen during Susan Austin's short one term tenure on the council.
