Election 2006: Recount & Runoff

Haggerty Wins in the Recount.

Now just over seven months old, the 2006 Campaign for county and state wide positions has become only slightly less uncertain. The big news is that we had one of the closest races in history.

The race for State Representative # 78 was unofficially decided by only 106 votes. Now that the recount is completed, the official results are that Haggerty won by 105 votes: 3,107 to 3,002 votes.

The challenger, Dr. Lorraine O’Donnell, sure put the scare into Pat Haggerty, the incumbent. Even though early polls indicated that Haggerty was way ahead, O’Donnell, an El Paso ISD Board Member, kept closing ground each day. O’Donnell claims that there are over 250 votes that have not been counted and has officially requested a recount.

The other race with Upper Valley and Westside implications had two former Canutillo ISD Board Members running against an attorney and Municipal Court Judge Rick Olivo. In a three way race it was almost assured that there would be a run off. Searls wound up with the next most votes and will face Olivo in the April 11th run-off election.

Will the Upper Valley vote stay united? Together Searls and Tarango received more votes than did Olivo. Then again it may be that Tarango’s Hispanic support will follow another Hispanic and provide Olivo the votes necessary to win.
